The Free Papua Organization, known by its Indonesian abbreviation OPM, is a separatist movement that was established in 6 provinces in Papua, previously known as Papua, Irian Jaya, and Irian Barat. The movement has been at the center of a complex and long-standing conflict, and its activities have sparked both national and international attention.

The OPM is characterized by three main elements. Firstly, it comprises different armed unit groups, each with limited territorial control and without a single commander. These armed units operate independently, often leading to a fragmented and decentralized structure within the movement. Secondly, there are several groups in the region that conduct demonstrations and protests, seeking to raise awareness of the issues faced by the people of Papua. Finally, there is a small group of leaders based abroad who work to garner international support for independence and draw attention to the situation in the region.

The military wing of the OPM has been labeled by the Indonesian government as Armed Criminal Groups (KKB), Armed Separatist Criminal Groups (KKSB), and Papua Terrorist Separatist Groups (KSTP). These labels reflect the Indonesian government's stance on the activities of the OPM and its associated groups.

Since its inception, the OPM has pursued various strategies to further its cause. This has included diplomatic efforts, such as holding ceremonies to raise the Morning Star flag, which is seen as a symbol of Papuan independence. Additionally, the movement has been associated with acts of terrorism as part of the conflict in Papua. Supporters of the OPM regularly display the Morning Star flag and other symbols of Papuan separatism, including the national anthem "Hai Tanahku Papua" and the state emblem adopted in 1961. However, these symbols have been met with opposition from the Indonesian government since it assumed control over the region in 1963.

The OPM's activities have led to it being considered a separatist organization in Indonesia, and its members have faced charges of treason as a result of their actions. The conflict between the Indonesian government and the OPM has been marked by periods of violence and unrest, with both sides engaging in actions that have further fueled tensions.

The situation in Papua is complex and multifaceted, with historical, political, and cultural dimensions contributing to the ongoing conflict. The desire for independence and self-determination among certain segments of the Papuan population has been met with resistance from the Indonesian government, leading to a protracted struggle for autonomy and recognition.

Efforts to address the conflict in Papua have included dialogue and mediation initiatives aimed at finding a peaceful resolution. However, these efforts have faced significant challenges, and the situation remains unresolved. The international community has also been engaged in discussions surrounding the conflict in Papua, with calls for greater attention to be paid to human rights issues and the aspirations of the Papuan people.

In conclusion, the Free Papua Organization (OPM) is a separatist movement that has been at the center of a long-standing conflict in Papua. The movement's activities have encompassed various strategies, including armed resistance, diplomatic efforts, and acts of protest. The conflict between the OPM and the Indonesian government reflects deep-seated tensions and aspirations for self-determination among certain segments of the Papuan population. Addressing the underlying issues and finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict remains a significant challenge, requiring sustained efforts and engagement from all relevant stakeholders.

The situation in Papua serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in addressing separatist movements and conflicts rooted in historical, political, and cultural factors. It also underscores the importance of dialogue, understanding, and empathy in seeking to address such conflicts and move towards a more peaceful and inclusive future for all involved parties.
